Charlottesville, Va. – The 22nd-ranked Virginia women’s golf team plays in the 26th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championship April 17-19 in Greensboro, N.C., at the historic Sedgefield Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will feature 18 holes of competition per day at the par-71, 6,210-yard course that once hosted the Greater Greensboro Open and is the current site of the PGA’s Wyndham Championship. It is also the site of the founding of the conference. This marks the sixth consecutive year the ACC Championships have been held at Sedgefield Country Club.
The Cavaliers are paired with North Carolina and Florida State during Thursday’s opening round and tee off starting at 9:40 a.m. Boston College and Maryland are scheduled to open play at 8 a.m. while Notre Dame, NC State and Miami tee off at 8:50 a.m. The final pairings of Wake Forest, Clemson and Duke start at 10:30 a.m.
The third-ranked Blue Devils are seeking their third-straight ACC title and 19th overall, but will face stiff challenges from an 11-team field that also includes seven other top-30 teams, including No. 12 Clemson and No. 18 Wake Forest. North Carolina is No. 21, followed by Virginia No. 22, Florida State No. 25, Miami No. 26 and NC State No. 27.
Virginia’s lineup will feature seniors Elizabeth Brightwell and Portland Rosen, juniors Briana Mao and Lauren Coughlin and freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi. This will be the first ACC Championship appearance for Coughlin and Diaz-Yi. Brightwell leads UVa this season with a 75.30 scoring average.
Brightwell’s top ACC finish was a 12th-place showing in 2012. Mao was ninth in 2013 and 11th in 2012 and Rosen was 15th in 2011.
Virginia placed third overall at last season’s ACC Championships behind the individual title won by senior Brittany Altomare. Virginia has placed second at the ACCs three times in the nine years the Cavaliers have competed in the event. UVa was the runner-up in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
