Greensboro, N.C. – The 22nd-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is tied with No. 3 Duke following Thursday’s opening round of play at the ACC Championships taking place at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers and Blue Devils both shot 7-over 291 to open the three-day, 54-hole event. Miami is in third place at 298 and North Carolina is fourth at 299.

It marks the first time since the 2008 tournament that Virginia has enjoyed a share of the lead.

Virginia was led by a pair of even par scores of 71 by Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.). They are tied for second on the leaderboard, two shots behind Florida State’s Matilda Castren. Castren was the only competitor to break par in the brisk, windy conditions.

Playing in her first ACC Championship, Coughlin got her round off to a quick start, recording three birdies over her first six holes. Bogeys on holes nine, 10 and 11 brought her back to par and she posted seven consecutive pars to end her day.

UVa freshman Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was the third Cavalier to finish in the top-10, shooting 2-over 73 to end the first round in seventh place. Portland Rosen (Sugar Land, Texas) was 22nd at 76 and Elizabeth Brightwell (Nellysford, Va./St. Anne’s Belfield) was 34th at 79.

“This is a challenging and tough golf course and they stepped up and played well today,” said Virginia coach Kim Lewellen. “It feels good to start off with a solid round to keep yourself in the tournament right from the start because there are some really good teams here. I’m glad we did that today.”

Eight of the 11 teams in the tournament are currently ranked in Golfstat’s top-30 poll. Duke is seeking its third straight ACC title and its 19th overall in the 26-year history of the tournament.

Virginia is scheduled to start its second round Friday at 10:30 a.m. while paired with Duke and Miami.

Live scoring of the tournament is online at Golfstat.com. There will be a free webcast of the tournament Friday between 2-4 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The live stream will be available at this website: http://theacc.co/wgolfchamp.
