CARY, N.C. – A trio of Virginia sophomores and one freshman earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis honors, announced by the league office Wednesday (April 23).
The Cavaliers earned a league-high four players on the All-ACC teams as determined by a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches. Sophomores Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) were named to the first team, while sophomore Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) was named to the second team and freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) earned a spot on the third team.
Elbaba, who is ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA singles rankings, earns All-ACC honors for the second consecutive season after posting a 16-3 dual record at No. 1 singles, including a 9-2 mark in ACC action. Elbaba was named ACC Player of the Week twice and clinched Virginia’s 5-2 win over then-No. 1 Duke with a 7-5, 7-5 win over then-No. 3 Beatrice Capra on Feb. 21. Elbaba is also ranked No. 13 in doubles with Pierson.
Collins, who transferred to Virginia from Florida, is ranked No. 36 after posting a 15-5 dual mark, including an 11-2 mark at Nos. 1 and 2 singles in ACC play. Collins earned back-to-back ACC Player of the Week honors in late March.
No. 62 Nauta earns her second straight All-ACC honor after posting a team-best 18-2 dual record. Nauta also posted an impressive 11-1 record in ACC action. No. 69 Pierson posted a 13-8 dual record, including a 7-1 mark at No. 4 singles.
No. 3 seed Virginia (18-5, 12-2 ACC) received a double bye in this weekend’s ACC Women’s Tennis Championship and will play No. 6 seed Georgia Tech (12-8, 9-5 ACC), No. 11 seed Virginia Tech (12-12, 4-10) or No. 14 seed NC State (8-13, 2-12 ACC) in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m.
