New London, N.C. – The No. 8 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for ninth place after the opening round of the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers opened play at the 54-hole tournament by shooting 6-over 294. Florida State leads the field at 4-under 284 followed by Georgia Tech at 288.

Virginia was led by Denny McCarthy’s 1-under 71 to put him in sixth place after the opening 18 holes of play. Ji Soo Park is 21st at 73 while David Pastore and Ben Rusch are tied for 33rd at 75. Freshman Derek Bard completed his first round of ACC Championship play with a 76.

Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans enjoyed a three-shot lead after the opening round. The third-ranked player in the nation shot 7-under 65.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
