Cavalier Men Finish Second at Cal-Michigan Tri-Meet

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Virginia men’s track and field team finished second in a tri-meet with California and Michigan in Berkeley. The Cavaliers won six events at the meet, including all four throwing events.
The host Golden Bears took the title with 152.5 points. The Cavaliers were second with 143.5 points and Michigan was third with 100 points.
“There were some things we could have done better to win the meet, but we can take a lot of plusses from today,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “Last year, Cal was the top dual meet team in the nation, so to come so close to beating them out here is a positive. In a competition like this, where you need to score points, we asked some people to do more than they normally do and we were stretched a little bit. We have a lot lot build off of and we can’t wait to get home and compete at Lannigan in two weeks.”
Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) had a strong performance in the 400m, crossing in 46.54 and winning the event by over two seconds. Fellow Cavalier Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) had a PR of 48.63 to finish second. Hazzard was second in the 200m in a PR of 21.36, the ninth-best time in school history.
Virginia concluded the meet by winning the 4x400m relay. The team of Carrington, Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.), Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga,) and Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) crossed in a time of 3:14.33.
The Cavaliers had the top two finishers in the discus with Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) winning with a mark of 197-5, moving him into third on the UVa all-time list. Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) was second with a mark of 193-8. In the shot put, Mihaljevic won with a season-best mark of 62-7.25, while Young was third with a mark of 61-0.
“Jordan Young continues to do amazing things,” said Fetzer. “He continues to get better with each meet and is throwing with a lot of confidence.”
Kyle Smith (Leola, Pa.) won the javelin with a throw of 211-10, moving him into fifth on Virginia’s all-time list. Anthony Bouselli (Hawley, Pa.) was third with a mark of 193-5, the third-best freshman throw in school history.
Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) had a strong performance in the horizontal jumps, finishing second in the long jump at 23-2.5 and third in the triple jump at 48-0.75, just behind teammate Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) at 48-9.5.
The Cavaliers will have two weeks to prepare for their next meet, the Virginia Challenge. The meet will run April 17-18 at Lannigan Field.
