Virginia Baseball Summer Notebook
July 9, 2015
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – While Virginia won the 2015 NCAA National Championship on June 24, many Cavaliers wasted little time in getting back to work in preparation for the 2016 season. Virginia has 11 players competing in various wooden bat summer leagues and the USA Collegiate National Team this summer. Following the completion of the collegiate summer season, players will return to Grounds for the fall semester in late August.
After joining the U.S. Collegiate National Team on June 27 following the completion of the College World Series, Matt Thaiss played in eight games and was part of the Americans’ five-game series win over Cuba. Thaiss was 5-for-24 (.208) with a double and three RBI during his stint with the national team.
Thaiss will join shortstop Daniel Pinero in the Cape Cod League. Pinero has played in six games with the Orleans Firebirds, while Thaiss will join the Hyannis Harbor Hawks later this weekend. Pinero is 6-for-26 (.231) with three RBI after a week of play at the Cape for the first-place Firebirds.
After finishing the season on a strong note and making the All-CWS Team, rising sophomore Ernie Clement has continued his hot play in his first week with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League. Clement is batting .391 (9-for-23) with five stolen bases in five games.
Rising sophomore Charlie Cody also has started well in the Northwoods League with the Madison Mallards. He is batting .300 (6-for-20) with a .500 on base percentage in six games.
