LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Virginia men’s track & field team set a pair of school records Saturday during the final day of the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Kentucky. As the Cavaliers competed against six of the top 11 teams in the nation, Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) broke the school record in the shot put and the 4x400m relay concluded the day with a school record in that event.

“This was an incredible meet, and honestly, a preview of the NCAA Indoor Nationals,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “We had some individuals that accepted the challenge and rose to the level of the competition. We have others that have settled too much and are content with just being good. To take it to the next level, we need everyone fighting to be great.”

Mihaljevic, who set the outdoor school record in the shot put last spring, set the record in his first indoor performance as a Cavalier. He had a mark of 64′ 5″ to finish sixth at the meet, and rank eighth in the nation this year. Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) moved up to third all-time at Virginia in the event, posting a mark of 61′ 10.5″ to finish seventh.

“Jordan and Filip bring a level of intensity that allows them to be great,” said Fetzer. “How they practice reflects on how they perform and that has shown in their results so far this year.”

The 4x400m relay of Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.), Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.), Logan Carrington (Leesburg, Va.) and David Bartha (Bonyhad, Hungary) crossed in a time of 3:12.52, breaking the previous record, which had stood for 26 years, by .03 of a second.

“Anytime you break a school record it is an accomplishment, especially one that has stood since 1989 and had one of college track’s all-time greats, Paul Ereng on it,” said Fetzer. “We have a lot left in the tank for the rest of the season. I will be highly disappointed if the record doesn’t get broken again in the next few weeks.”

Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) was fifth in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 50′ 6″. In the mile, junior Evan Chiplock (Saginaw, Mich.) had a seventh-place finish, crossing in a time of 4:10.19.

The Cavaliers had a pair of top-10 finishes in the 3000m with Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) crossing ninth in 8:11.53 and Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) finishing 10th in 18:13.51.

Redshirt-freshman Cam Collins (Calhoun, Ga.) completed an impressive first collegiate heptathlon, finishing eighth with a score 4,431, the fifth-best score in school history and third-best by a first-year.

Jeff Jernigan (DeKalb, Ga) had a PR in the pole vault, clearing 15′ 7.75″.

Virginia will return to action next weekend at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass. The women will compete on Friday (Jan. 30) and the men will compete on Saturday (Jan. 31).
