CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The Virginia baseball team’s 2016 season came to a conclusion Sunday following a 5-4 defeat to William & Mary in the NCAA Charlottesville Regional at Davenport Field. Charles Ameer’s seventh-inning solo homer broke a 4-4 tie as the Tribe advanced to face East Carolina for the regional championship later Sunday afternoon. Virginia finished its season with a 38-22 record.

Daniel Pinero (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) and Jack Gerstenmaier (So., Richmond, Va.) each had three hits for Virginia, which finished with a dozen hits but also left 12 runners on base.

Despite working 4 2/3 innings of solid relief, Virginia reliever Tommy Doyle (So., Vienna, Va.) took the loss. He gave up two earned runs and three hits while fanning three. Making his first start since April 13, UVA’s Daniel Lynch (Fr., Henrico, Va.) worked 1 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs and five hits.

William & Mary reliever Robert White (2-3) picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Joseph Gaouette notched his 11th save while working out of trouble in both the eighth and ninth innings, stranding two runners in each frame.

William & Mary (31-30) jumped to a 3-0 edge in the second inning while knocking Lynch from the game as Kyle Wrighte hit a two-run double to left and later scored on a Zach Pearson sac fly.

Virginia knotted the score with a three-run fourth inning. With one out, Pavin Smith (So., Jupiter, Fla.) and Pinero hit back-to-back doubles for UVA’s first run. Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.) and Gerstenmaier followed with RBI singles.

UVA took the lead in the top of the sixth on a solo home run from Pinero, his fourth long ball of the season. William & Mary countered in its half of the inning with Hunter Smith’s RBI single to plate Charley Gould, who hit a leadoff double.

The Tribe scored the decisive run in the seventh inning when Ameer led off with a solo homer to left-center.

Virginia reached the NCAA tournament for the 13th season, the fifth-longest current streak in Division I. UVA is one of 16 schools in NCAA history to reach at least 13 straight NCAA tournaments.
