CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ââ’¬” The No. 16 Virginia men’s soccer team lost 6-1 at No. 13 Louisville Saturday night at Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

Wesley Wade (So., South Orange, N.J.) scored his second goal of the year for the Cavaliers (3-2-2, 0-2-1 ACC). Mohamed Thiaw scored twice for Louisville (7-1-1, 3-0-0).

Louisville scored four goals in the first half to jump to a commanding lead. The Cardinals cashed in on a set piece in the 19th minute when Tim Kubel sent a free kick into the box, where Thiaw flicked it and found Jack Gayton, who slipped it past UVA goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell (Jr., Todd, N.C.) for the match’s first goal.

The Cardinals pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute when Thiaw beat the UVA defenders on a good run into the box and then ripped a shot inside the far post for his sixth goal. UofL extended its lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute off another Kubel free kick, with Grant Hollkamp finishing for the score, and the Cardinals added another goal four minutes later when Cherif Dieye beat a charging Caldwell and tapped the ball into the goal.

Virginia broke through in the 56th minute as Pablo Aguilar (R-Jr., Guatemala City, Guatemala) sent a ball forward, and Wade beat a defender to the ball and quickly slipped it past diving keeper Stefan Cleveland for the goal.

Louisville countered two minutes later when Cody Cochran headed in a goal and added its final goal in the 63rd minute on Thiaw’s second score.

Louisville out-shot UVA 20-1 and put 13 shots on goal, while UVA scored on its lone shot on goal. Caldwell matched a career high with seven saves.

Virginia returns home Tuesday (Sept. 27) for the first of three straight home matches, taking on Cornell in a 7 p.m. non-conference match. The Cavaliers play host No. 19 Virginia Tech next Friday (Sept. 30).
