LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 4 Virginia men’s track and field team qualified two student-athletes for the NCAA Championships on the opening day of the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds on Thursday (May 25) in Lexington, Ky., at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Complex.

Each individual event (excluding the heptathlon and decathlon) will have 48 competitors, while relays will have 24 teams. The top 12 from every event will move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, to be held in Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10.

UVA qualified two student-athletes for the NCAA Championships in the hammer. Sophomore Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) placed second with a distance of 70.60m (231-7), a season best. Senior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ont.) finished ninth in the event with a mark of 68.41m (224-5). He also recorded a season best with the throw.

“Great day for the guys,” assistant coach Martin Maric said. “Hilmar (Jonsson) and Jordan (Young) secured their ticket to Eugene on their first throw. Hilmar has been known as Mr. Consistent this year and has lived up to this nickname yet again, finishing with a season best and just a few centimeters short of first place. Jordan continues to progress as his ankle is getter better. Better things are yet to come from him.”

In the semifinals for the 10,000m, redshirt sophomore Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) finished 14th with a time of 30.12.13, while senior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) finished 15th with a time of 30:13.95. Redshirt freshman Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) finished with a time of 31.40.57 for 45th.

Sophomore Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.) recorded a time of 53.29 in the 400m hurdles. He finished 32nd in the event.

In the 400m, senior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) finished with a time of 48.52. He placed 41st in the meet.

Battling a fever that nearly qualified him a medical scratch, senior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) competed in the 1,500m. Wynne led the second flight through the opening half of the race, but was unable to keep pace nearing the end. He finished the event 42nd with a time of 3:58.64.
