CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-  The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will have eight student-athletes, five males and three females, compete at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The men and women will alternate days over the course of the four-day meet beginning on Wednesday (June 6).

Four Cavaliers will make a return trip to outdoor championships. Redshirt junior Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) leads the team with his third NCAA outdoor appearance in the shot put after qualifying with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Prelims. Junior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and sophomore Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) qualified for their second NCAA performance. Jonsson placed fifth in the hammer throw at the NCAA East Prelims to earn a qualifying spot, while Scott finished fourth in the triple jump. Sophomore Andrenette Knight (Morant Bay, Jamaica) ran at last year’s championship in the 400m hurdles, competing for San Diego State. At this year’s regional meet, she captured the fourth-best time in the 400m hurdles to punch her ticket to the national championship.

Virginia rounds out the team with four Cavaliers participating in their first NCAA Outdoor Championship. On the women’s side, redshirt junior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) and junior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) qualified in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively. Guy heads into the week holding the nation’s fourth-best jump in the pole vault, clearing 4.46m (14’7.5″). McKee advanced in the triple jump, posting the eighth-best mark at the NCAA East Prelims. She ranks 18th nationally in the event.

Despite competing with the distance medley relay at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships, graduate student Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) will make his first NCAA outdoor appearance running in the 1500m. Marsella advanced to the national meet with a fifth-place finish in his heat at the NCAA East Prelims. Freshman Alfred Shirley III (Chesapeake, Va.) set a school record in the 400m dash on his way to qualifying for the outdoor championships.

At last year’s national championship, both Jonsson and Efekoro earned first-team All-America honors with a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw and shot put, respectively. Knight’s 11th-place finish in the 400m hurdles captured second-team All-America honors, while Scott was named to the honorable mentions team with an 18th-place finish in the triple jump.
