West Lafayette, Ind.- Members of the Virginia men’s and women’s swim teams concluded action at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday (Nov. 11) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The Big Ten Conference swept the meet, winning the women’s competition 251-102 and the men’s competition 179-174.

“We wrapped up a fun competition against the Big Ten today with plenty of season-best swims,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “Some standout performances today were Brendan Casey’s 100 free and Zach Fong’s 200 fly. Both were season bests by a significant amount. Sydney Dusel, again shinning on the spring board, finished second in a tough field. There is definitely a lot to take away from this competition and quite a bit to learn. We are looking forward to our next tests coming up at Navy and Georgia.”

Junior Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) highlighted the Cavaliers’ performance, finishing second in the 3m board with a score of 323.55.

In the swim meet, sophomore Abby Richter (Henderson, Nev.), leadoff, and junior Morgan Hill (Olney, Md.) anchor, aided the 200-yard medley relay team to a fifth-place finish alongside teammates Zorry Mason (Miami) and Kylie Jordan (Duke). The four recorded a time of 1:39.48.

Sophomore Keefer Barnum (Louisville, Ky.) swam breaststroke for his 200-yard medley relay team of Nicolas Albiero (Louisville), Giovanni Izzo (NC State) and Ian Ho (Virginia Tech). The team placed fourth with a time of 1:26.04.

As an individual, Barnum’s 100-yard breaststroke swim placed him third in the meet. He recorded a time of 53.70.

Senior Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.) placed sixth in the 1000-yard freestyle, recording a time of 9:05.04, while sophomore Robby Giller (Wilton, Conn.) finished eighth with a time of 9:26.03.

Sophomore Paige Madden (Mobile, Ala.) finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming a time of 1:47.73.

In the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Julia Menkhaus (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a time of 1:58.30 for a fifth-place finish. Senior Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) finished fourth in the men’s race, capturing a time of 1:44.75.

Hill placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.84 as Richter finished seventh in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.94.

Hill, with the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Abigail Dolan (Notre Dame), Ky-lee Perry (NC State) and Mallory Comerford (Louisville), finished second with a time of 3:12.25. Madden led the team of Maria Artigas (Miami), Manon Viguier (Miami) and Easop Lee (Duke) to an eighth-place finish (3:23.85).

Junior Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Giovanni Izzo (NC State), Aaron Schultz (Notre Dame) and Miles Williams (Duke) concluded the meet with a fourth-place finish and a time of 2:56.12.

Virginia will return to action for the Navy Diving Invite Nov. 15-16 in Annapolis, Md.
