No. 12 Virginia Drops Matches Against No. 4 Stanford, No. 9 Drexel

Philadelphia, Pa.- The No. 12 Virginia women’s squash team (3-3) fell to No. 9 Drexel (2-1) and No. 4 Stanford (1-1) on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. The Cavaliers dropped 6-3 to Drexel, before suffering an 8-1 loss to the Cardinal.
“Our schedule has us playing some of the toughest teams early on this season, having now played three top-10 ranked teams in the last six days,” head coach Mark Allen said. “The team is responding relatively well to the challenge and we are very close to making the step upwards to this next level. Plenty of the games were competitive even though (they were) not won. We just need a little more self-belief to begin converting on some of the opportunities we are creating.”
The Cavaliers secured three points in the team’s match against Drexel. After a 3-0 start from the Dragons, sophomore Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) recorded an 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 win in position eight against Apoorva Addepalli. She was followed by junior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.), who topped Emma Macgillivray 11-3, 12-10, 11-5 in position nine. Freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Canada) captured a win in the last match against the Dragons, winning 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-2 in the top position against Anna Hughes.
Junior Tara Arya (Cupertinio, Calif.) recorded the Cavaliers lone point against Stanford. Arya topped Lucy Rowe in position five, winning 5-11, 11-2, 5-11, 11-7, 11-2.
In addition to Arya’s win, three Cavaliers forced a fourth game. Jinks battled to a 6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-9 loss in the No. 1 position, while senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.) fell 11-9, 11-8, 4-11, 11-7 in position six and junior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) fell 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-5 in position seven.
Virginia will return to action tomorrow to face No. 6 Pennsylvania at 1:30 p.m.
