Harlem, N.Y.- The No. 12 Virginia men’s squash team (4-4) defeated No. 16 Cornell (1-2), 5-4, on Saturday (Dec. 1) at the SL Green StreetSquash in Harlem, N.Y., after falling to No. 3 Columbia (2-0), 9-0, earlier in the day.
Two Cavaliers forced extra games against the Lions as sophomore William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) battled to an 11-7, 11-4, 6-11, 11-4 loss in position three against Callan Hall and senior Killian Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) forced five games in position nine with an 11-7, 15-13, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7 loss to Matthew Rebello.
In the team’s match against Cornell, senior Grayson Bubrosky (New Canaan, Conn.) captured the first point with an 11-4, 11-4, 11-4 win in position four against Illia Presman. The Big Red responded with a win in position two, but sophomore Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) topped position eight 11-7, 14-12, 11-7 for a win against Nikhil Iyer and freshman Glenn Yates (Cape Town, South Africa) topped position six 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9 for a win against Nicholas Goth Errington.
Cornell captured a win in position nine and three to tie the match at 3-3, before taking the lead with a win in position one. Senior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated Luke Park in position seven 11-7, 3-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9 to even the score at 4-4 and force the decision to be made in position five.
In a five-game victory, William Braff defeated Illia Presman 15-13, 11-8, 4-11, 7-11, 11-8, to clinch the win for the Cavaliers.
Virginia will return tomorrow to face New York University at 9:30 a.m. at SL Green StreetSquash.
