Virginia Opens ACC Women's Championships Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia (15-7, 9-5 ACC) women’s tennis team opens play at the ACC Championships at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, facing No. 11 seed Wake Forest in a second-round matchup. Virginia is the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
The winner of Thursday’s match will advance to face No. 3 seed North Carolina in the quarterfinals at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

Tickets for the ACC Women’s Tennis Championships are available online at TheACC.com. Single day passes are $9 for adults and $7 for children and senior citizens. College students with ID will be admitted free of charge. Championship passes for the entire event are also available for $17 for adults and $13 for children and senior citizens.
A LOOK AT THE CAVALIERS
Virginia enters the ACC Championships as the No. 6 seed after posting a 15-7 record on the year and a 9-5 mark in ACC play. The Cavaliers’ nine wins in ACC play is the third-most ACC wins in a single season in program history, tying the mark set by the 2013 and 2016 teams. UVA is 8-3 in its last 11 matches, dating back to an almost two week break in action for spring break following a loss to No. 2 Duke on March 4.
Virginia has faced 10 teams ranked in the ITA rankings this season, posting a 5-5 record against those teams. Three of those five losses came to teams ranked in the top 5 of the rankings (at No. 1 UNC, vs. No. 2 Duke and at No. 3 Georgia Tech). It is quite a turnaround for the Hoos with every player returning from last year’s squad that went 11-13 on the season.
VIRGINIA IN THE RANKINGS
The Cavaliers are in the top 25 of the team rankings for the 10th week this season. Virginia is ranked No. 20 in the latest Oracle/ITA Women’s Tennis rankings.
Virginia features a doubles team in the national rankings as the pairing of Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) is ranked No. 18 in the ITA Women’s Doubles rankings. In singles, the Cavaliers also have one player make an appearance with Johanson ranked No. 35 nationally. It’s a career-high ranking for Johanson in singles.
CAVALIERS VS. WAKE FOREST
Virginia is 23-27 all-time against the Demon Deacons. The Cavaliers won 5-2 in the regular-season finale on Sunday, taking 5-of-6 singles matches to earn the win. Wake Forest was ranked No. 28 at the time of the meeting. The win by the Hoos snapped a stretch of back-to-back regular-season losses to the Demon Deacons.
UVA dropped the doubles point and surrendered the second point on court one when Johanson retired after the first set against Emma Davis.
UVA AT THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Cavaliers are 24-31 all time in the ACC Championships since the spring championship began in the 1983 season. Virginia is 14-8 in the ACC Championships over the last 10 seasons, including winning back-to-back titles in 2014, 2015. In addition to the two titles, the Cavaliers finished as runners up in the 1989 ACC Championships.
Virginia faced Florida State last season in the 8/9 matchup, dropping a hard-fought, 4-2 decision to the Seminoles. The Cavaliers have advanced to the semifinals or better in five of the previous six ACC Championships.
