No. 20 Virginia Travels To Virginia Tech For Saturday Match

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 20 Virginia (12-5, 6-3 ACC) women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend for its Commonwealth Clash match at Virginia Tech (12-6, 3-6 ACC). The two teams face off at 1 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

CAVALIERS IN THE RANKINGS
The Cavaliers remained in the top 25 of the Oracle/ITA rankings this week, coming in at No. 20 after splitting matches last weekend against William & Mary and then No. 24 Florida State. It’s the seventh week this season for the Hoos to appear in the top 25 nationally.

Virginia features a doubles team in the national rankings as the pairing of Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) is ranked No. 16 in the ITA Women’s Doubles rankings. In singles, the Cavaliers also have one player make an appearance with Johanson ranked No. 47 nationally.

A LOOK AT VIRGINIA TECH
The Hokies enter the weekend matchup with an overall record of 12-6 this season, but hold a 3-6 mark in conference play. Virginia Tech has posted wins in ACC play against Boston College, Clemson and Pittsburgh. The losses have come at the hands of Louisville, No. 1 North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame, then No. 12 Wake Forest and Syracuse. The Hokies and Cavaliers have played five common opponents to this point of the season, with UVA going 5-0 against those teams.

Virginia Tech has one player ranked in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings with Natalie Novotna coming in at No. 61 overall. The Hokies do not have a doubles team in the rankings.

COMMONWEALTH CLASH
The Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529 is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 21 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy. UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will continue to play on the road next weekend with a pair of matches at No. 1 North Carolina and NC State. The Cavaliers will face the Tar Heels at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 13. Virginia will then face the Wolfpack at noon on Sunday, April 15.
