NCAA Tournament Championship Central

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Rosie Johanson (Vancouver, British Columbia) has been selected to the 2018 NCAA Women’s Singles Championship and will team up with junior Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) in the NCAA Women’s Doubles Championship with the release of the field for both competitions by the NCAA on Wednesday (May 2).

Johanson is one of 64 players selected to compete for the NCAA championship in singles, while she and Kelley are one of the 32 doubles teams selected to compete for an NCAA championship. The 2018 NCAA Women’s Singles and Doubles Championships will be held at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex after the conclusion of the team championships which run May 17-22. The singles and doubles championships run May 23-28.

It is Johanson’s first selection for the NCAA Tournament field of 64 in singles. She is ranked No. 35 in the latest Oracle/ITA singles rankings for her highest singles ranking of her career. Johanson holds a 22-12 record on the season and went 12-7 in dual matches, with an 8-6 mark in ACC play. She has posted nine wins over nationally-ranked players this season, including a win over ninth-ranked Elena Perez-Somarriba of Miami to help the Cavaliers to an upset win over the Hurricanes.

In doubles, the tandem of Johanson and Kelley is ranked No. 18 nationally in the Oracle/ITA Tennis rankings and have locked down the top spot in the Virginia doubles lineup this season. The duo has posted a 26-9 overall record, including a 12-7 mark in dual match play. They won the ITA Atlantic Regional in the fall, advancing to the quarterfinals at the ITA Fall National Championships. The pair is 8-5 against nationally-ranked doubles opponents this season.

It is the second appearance at the NCAA Doubles Championships for Kelley, who earned a berth as a freshman in 2016 when she paired with Danielle Collins. The duo earned an at-large bid to the championships that season and advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles.

All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches. In doubles, a 10-point match tiebreaker will be played in lieu of a third set.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 completed singles matches, with six matches in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championship is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have started a minimum of 10 doubles matches, eight must be completed, with four of the eight matches completed in the spring, in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
