Lewiston, N.Y. – Virginia senior Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) won the 2018 Porter Cup on Saturday at Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, N.Y. Walsh finished the 72-hole event at 11-under 269, three shots ahead of a trio of golfers who tied for second place.
 
Walsh posted rounds of 69, 65, 67 and 68 on the par-70 course. He entered Saturday’s final round with a three-shot lead on the field. At one point during the final round, he pushed his lead to six shots.
 
It was Walsh’s second appearance at the Porter Cup. He finished 11th in 2016. 
 
Walsh becomes the second Cavalier to claim the Porter Cup title. Denny McCarthy, a current member of the PGA Tour, took top honors in 2015.
 
Previous winners of the Porter Cup, one of the nation’s top amateur events, includes the likes of David Duval (1992), Phil Mickelson (1990), Robert Gamez (1989), Scott Verplank (1983, 1985), Ben Crenshaw (1972) and Deane Beman (1964).
