No. 7 Virginia Hosts Longwood on Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia field hockey (1-1, 0-0 ACC) plays its first home game of the 2018 season, hosting Longwood (1-0, 0-0 MAC) on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. at Turf Field.
The game will air on ACC Network Extra, which is available to authenticated subscribers of ESPN3 through WatchESPN and the ESPN app. Fans can also keep up with the action through live stats linked at VirginiaSports.com.
The Cavaliers opened the 2018 campaign with an 8-1 victory at Drexel with Cavalier first years accounting for six of the goals. Freshman Peyton Tollaksen (Chesapeake, Va.) scored the first two goals of the season for the Cavaliers, giving her a game-winner in her first collegiate contest. Freshman Grace Wallis (Blue Bell, Pa.) also scored two goals in her collegiate debut. Freshman Greer Gill (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored a goal and also had an assist. Freshman Amber Ezechiels (Niew-Vennep, Netherlands) scored a goal on her only shot of the season, starting her career with a 1.000 shooting percentage.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) made nine saves in last Sunday’s 1-0 loss at No. 6 Penn State.
The defending regular-season ACC champs start the season ranked No. 7 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers were one of the most-potent offenses in the nation during the 2017 season, finishing the year ranked first in goals per game (4.40) and second in points (12.15) and penalty corners per game (9.40), while ranking third in scoring margin (+2.75) and assists per game (3.35).
Longwood opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Bucknell. The Lancers hosted UMass Lowell on Thursday night and were leading, 4-2, when the game went into a weather delay in the 46th minute. The game was eventually cancelled after an extensive delay and will not count towards the season record nor will the statistics since it was not an official game. No makeup will be scheduled between the two programs.
The Lancers posted an 11-6 record last season and a program-best 4-2 mark in the Mid-American Conference. All-MAC performers Clara Meschini (defense), Leonie Verstaete (forward) and Katie Wyman (goalie) are among the 14 returners from last year’s squad.
The Cavaliers finish the current homestand with a pair of games next weekend, playing its ACC opener next Friday, Sept. 7, taking on Syracuse at 4 p.m.
Virginia closes out the homestand by hosting in-state rival Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
