Friday Results/Saturday Draws

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s tennis team is hosting the UVA Masters tournament Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Friday’s doubles matches were moved indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club, but the singles matches were played outdoors as scheduled.

Two Cavaliers made their collegiate debuts on Friday. True freshmen William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) and Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) played in both doubles and singles matches. Goetz picked up a win in his singles debut, advancing to the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Columbia’s Jason Lui before falling in the Round of 32. Redshirt freshman Ethan Moszkowski (New York, N.Y.) also made his delayed collegiate debut after sitting out last season, playing in doubles.

Sophomore Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) started his fall season with a victory, downing Tyler Schick of Tulane 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the Saturday’s Round of 16 in singles. Sophomore Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) also opened the fall season with a victory, downing Theodore McDonald of Kentucky, 6-2, 7-6, but fell in the Round of 32.

The Cavaliers had three doubles teams competing in various draws. All three dropped their opening matches, but Goetz and sophomore Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) as well as Woodall and senior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) won consolation matches to advance to Saturday’s white and orange brackets’ consolation finals.

The UVA Masters is a double-elimination tournament with three doubles draws and one singles bracket. The singles champion will earn a wildcard entry into qualifying for October’s Charlottesville Challenger. Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State, NC State, Notre Dame, Tulane, Wake Forest and Virginia will be competing as individuals in the singles and doubles draws.

Action resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final doubles matches with singles action to follow. Sunday’s singles matches will start at 8 a.m.

Live scoring and video will not be available for the matches, but results will be posted on VirginiaSports.com at the end of each day.

Admission is free for the tournament.
