ATHENS, Ga.-  The Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams concluded the opening day of the Georgia Diving Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga., with two Cavaliers finishing in the top five of the women’s 3m dive on Friday (Jan. 4).

“I’m proud of the way Sydney (Dusel) and Kylie (Towbin) competed today,” head diving coach Drew Livingston said. “Competing after coming off the holiday break can be tough, especially with a full training load, but they showed grit today. Both got better over the long day and hung tough with some of the best divers in the country. I’m excited to see them build off this performance this weekend and into the rest of the season. I’m also looking forward to seeing the rest of the squad learn from today and put their best foot forward tomorrow and Sunday.”

Junior Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) led the Cavaliers during the opening day’s events, advancing to the finals of the 3m board. Dusel recorded a score of 342.25 for a third-place finish, while Towbin battled to a fifth-place finish after capturing a score of 318.75.

In addition to Dusel and Towbin, Virginia had three Hoos compete on the women’s 3m board. Freshman Emma Bulger (Reston, Va.) recorded a score of 223.75 for a 26th-place finish. Redshirt sophomore Bailey Mills (Evergreen, Colo.) finished 30th with a score of 214.25 as sophomore Jocelyn Porter (Cornelius, N.C.) placed 33rd with a score of 213.40.

On the men’s 1m board, Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) recorded a score of 275.85 to finish 15th in the competition, while freshman Walker Creedon (Cary, N.C.) placed 22nd with 256.70 points and sophomore Tristan Gess (Lakewood, Colo.) placed 30th with 189.30 points.

Virginia will return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. for day two of the Georgia Diving Invitational. The men’s team will compete on the 3m board, while the women compete on the 1m board.
