PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Virginia women’s squash team concluded the season on Sunday (March 3) at the Holleran Cup, the B division of the College Squash Association Individual Championships, at the Nicol Squash Center.
“Having three players (Mandy Haywood, Emily Woodworth and Emma Jinks) still involved in the final day of play at (CSA) Individuals is a new milestone for the program,” head coach Mark Allen said.” All six of the players representing us this weekend played hard, and a couple played their best squash yet. And all of our representatives this weekend were lower classmen. The experience gained this weekend will undoubtedly prove useful to each of them in the future.”
Freshman Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) won her final match of the season, defeating Ona Prokes (Drexel) in the Holleran Cup South consolation finals. After winning the first game, Haywood dropped in sets two and three to trail in the match. She would battle back to clinch the final two games and capture an 11-5, 9-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-6 come-from-behind victory against Prokes.
Freshman Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edwards Island) suffered her first loss of the tournament after advancing to the finals where she faced Vanessa Raj (Trinity). She forced the match into a fourth game, but fell 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 to finish as the Holleran Cup South runner-up.
