Virginia Opens Indoor Season at Nittany Lion Challenge

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will open the indoor season on Saturday (Jan. 12) at the Nittany Lion Challenge, hosted by Penn State at the Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

The Meet
• The Cavaliers will face the men’s and women’s track and field teams from Army, Bucknell, Georgetown, Iowa State, Maryland, Penn State, Pittsburgh and Point Park, and the women’s track and field team from UConn.
• Penn State is the lone ranked team at the meet, ranking 14th in the men’s USTFCCCA preseason poll and 23rd in the women’s poll.
The 2018 Indoor Season
• Virginia is led by junior Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica), who captured his second indoor All-America honor last season in the triple jump. He placed second at the ACC Championships in the event, helping him conclude the 2018 campaign with five All-ACC honors.
• In addition to Scott, the men’s team returns three All-ACC honorees in redshirt senior Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.), senior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Island) and senior Nace Plesko (Ljubjana, Slovenia). Efekoro was the ACC runner up in the shot put and recorded a career-best throw in the weight throw at the conference meet to finish fifth. Jonsson finished as the ACC runner-up in the weight throw as Plesko captured a fourth-place finish in the shot put.
• The Cavalier women have four returning All-ACC recipients. Seniors Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) and Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) earned the conference honor in the triple jump as McKee finished as the conference runner-up and Barron placed fourth. Sophomore Gabrille Hayes (Woodbridge, Va.) finished sixth in the high jump, while Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) placed fifth in the shot put.
All-American Honorees
• In addition to Scott’s indoor honor, the junior captured his second All-American honor of the year during the outdoor season in the triple jump with a 10th-place finish.
• Efekoro placed sixth at NCAA outdoor championships in the shot put, while Jonsson placed 11th in the hammer throw and sophomore Alfred Shirley III (Chesapeake, Va.) finished 15th in the 400m dash.
• Redshirt senior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) captured the program’s first female pole vault All-American honor, tying for fourth-place at the national outdoor meet. Junior Andrenette Knight (Morant Bay, Jamaica) finished 10th in the 400m hurdles, while McKee finished ninth in the triple jump.
