Virginia Hosts George Washington In Washington-Jefferson Cup Matchup

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams will host George Washington on Wednesday (Jan. 23) at the McArthur Squash Center as the Cavaliers look to win the Washington-Jefferson Cup.
Both the No. 14 Virginia men’s (6-4) match against No. 12 George Washington (7-7) and the No. 11 Cavalier women’s (7-5) match against the No. 13 Colonials (2-7) will be played at 5:30 p.m.
The Washington-Jefferson Cup
• The two teams will be competing for the Washington-Jefferson Cup, an annual rivalry started between Cavaliers and the Colonials during the 2016-17 season. The winner is determined by a cumulative score for both the men’s and women’s match.
• The Cavaliers will look to win the matchup for the first time since the cup’s establishment two years ago.
Last Year
• The two programs met last year at the George Washington’s Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts as the Cavaliers dropped in both matchups.
• The men’s team fell 6-3 as four matches went into a tiebreak set, three of which were a five-set game. Senior James Dudzik (Greenwich, Conn.) captured one of the Cavaliers’ victories from last season’s matchup, topping position nine after a five-game battle.
• On the women’s side, the Cavaliers suffered a 5-4 loss as senior Annie Tyson (Flourtown, Pa.), senior Madeleine Mayhew (New York, N.Y.) and junior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) recorded wins in positions six, seven and eight, respectively.
Last Time Out
• The Cavaliers enter the mid-week match after sweeping Williams on Saturday (Jan. 19) in Annapolis, Md.
• The men’s team edged the No. 19 Ephs 5-4, capturing wins from senior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich), junior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.), sophomore Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.), and freshmen Patrick McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) and Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.).
• The women swept No. 15 Williams 9-0 as eight of the nine matchups were decided in three games.
The Colonials
• The Colonials also faced Williams in their last match. The men’s team defeated the Ephs 9-0, while the women fell 6-3.
