CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-  Virginia track and field runner Alfred Shirley III (Chesapeake, Va.) was named the men’s ACC Track Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Wednesday (Jan. 23).
 
Shirley led the Cavaliers over the weekend at the Keydet Invitational, setting two facility records at VMI’s Corps Physical Training Facility.
 
Competing in a field of 32 runners, Shirley topped the 500m run, capturing a time of 1:02.57. He also aided the men’s distance medley relay to a first-place finish and a facility record, racing the second leg of the event with a time of 48.61. The team recorded a combined time of 9:59.30, the nation’s fourth-best DMR time this season.
 
Virginia and Shirley will return to action this weekend as the Cavaliers compete in the Columbia Challenge beginning on Friday (Jan. 25) in New York.
