CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in the two-day Columbia Challenge, beginning on Friday (Jan. 25) at the New York City Armory in New York.

• Six Cavalier performances rank in nation’s top 50 as redshirt senior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) ranks 17th in the pole vault, redshirt freshman Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) ranks 21st in the 60m hurdles, senior Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) ranks 32nd in the shot put, freshman Trey Causey (Winchester, Va.) ranks 38th in the high jump and redshirt senior Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) ranks 47th in the triple jump.
•Additionally, the men’s DMR team holds the fourth-best time this season, running a time of 9:59.30.
ACC Weekly Honors
• Sophomore Alfred Shirley III (Chesapeake, Va.) earned the men’s ACC Track Performer of the Week honor for his performance at the Keydet Invitational. Shirley set two facility records, topping the 500m run and helping Virginia’s DMR set the new standard.
Last Time Out
•Virginia set four facility records at the two-day Keydet Invitational including two site records set by Shirley, who captured the Corps Physical Training Facility record in the 500m (1:02.57) and aided the men’s distance medley relay to a first-place finish and facility record (9:59.30). Shirley ran the second leg of the race, competing alongside teammates redshirt junior Ari Klau (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Ryan Buscaglia (Richmond, Va.) and redshirt junior Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.). Plesko set the record in the shot put, reaching a mark of 17.71m (58’1.25), while the 4x800m relay team of Buscaglia, redshirt junior Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.), Klau and junior AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) set the site record with a time of 7:40.41.
• Hazzard went undefeated through three rounds of the women’s 60m dash, recording the fastest time in the finals at 7.38. Her performance ranks second all-time at UVA, just one-hundredth of a second behind Kiamesha Otey’s school record from 2003.
