Franklin and Marshall Results | Middlebury Results

Lancaster, Pa.- The No. 14 Virginia men’s squash team (10-4) edged both No. 17 Franklin and Marshall (9-4) and No. 18 Middlebury (10-3) in matches on Saturday (Jan. 26). The Cavaliers captured a 5-4 victory over the Diplomats at Franklin and Marshall’s Mayser Squash Courts before topping the Panthers 5-4 in a match at the Lancaster Country Day School.

The Cavaliers opened the day, battling Franklin and Marshall to a 5-4 win. The Diplomats captured the first two-points of the match with a win in position two and four, respectively. Sophomore Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) put the Cavaliers on the scoreboard with an 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9 victory in position eight against Ricardo Machado as the team followed with a win from sophomore Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) in position six, defeating Boden Polikoff 12-10, 5-11, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5.

Senior Henry Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) gave Virginia the lead, topping Samm Fulton in position nine, 1-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-3, as freshman Glenn Yates (Cape Town, South Africa) topped Matthew Dukarm in position seven, 13-11, 11-9, 11-8.

The Diplomats evened the score with wins in positions five and three, respectively, as attention turned to the top of the ladder. Freshman Patrick McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) battled back to take a 4-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 win over Shamseldeen Abbas to capture the win for the Cavaliers.

In the team’s second match of the day against Middlebury, Katz again opened with the team’s first point, defeating Alexander Merrill 11-3, 11-8, 11-8 in position eight. The Panthers responded with a win in position four, but Yates topped Wiatt Hinton in position six 11-8, 11-5, 11-1, to retain the Cavaliers’ lead.

Freshman Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.) moved the Cavaliers to a 3-1 score, capturing a 11-6, 16-14, 12-10 victory in position two against Jacob Ellen, as senior Henry Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) defeated Thomas Wolpow 11-9, 11-3, 14-12 in position nine.

The Panthers recorded a win in position seven, but a 11-9, 11-6, 13-11 win from sophomore William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) against Jacob Kagan in position three clinched the match for Virginia.  

The Cavaliers will return home tomorrow, hosting No. 7 Yale in a match at the McArthur Squash Center at 1 p.m.
