CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –Virginia men’s tennis team junior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) has been named the ACC Men’s Tennis Singles Player of the Week in honors announced Tuesday (Jan. 29) by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Söderlund helped the Cavaliers punch their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships by taking down host Texas A&M. Söderlund clinched the doubles point for the Cavaliers on Court 1 by winning the match in a tiebreaker. In singles, the match was tied 3-3 with the fate of the Hoos resting on the results from the No. 2 singles court. Söderlund had lost his first set 6-1, and battled late in the second set to come away with a 7-5 victory. In the third set, he won a crucial deuce point to go up 4-2. With the match at 5-3, he was trailing 40-15 to Juan Carlos Aguilar, only to storm back and break Aguilar to cap the victory for the Cavaliers. In Saturday’s opener against Cal, Söderlund set the tone for singles, picking up a speedy 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jacob Brumm.

This is his first time earning the conference’s honor for singles after earning the honor for doubles once last season.
