No. 6 Virginia Hosts Liberty on Monday for Senior Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team (13-3, 3-2 ACC) plays its final home game of the 2019 regular season on Monday, October 28, hosting No. 17 Liberty (9-5, 4-2 BIG EAST) at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Day

  • There will be a postgame ceremony to honor the Cavaliers’ fourth years
  • All four senior players (Erin Shanahan, Anzel Viljoen, Colleen Norair and Catesby Willis) and the senior manager (Averi Bent) will be honored in a postgame ceremony
  • During their four years, this senior class have has been ranked in the top-25 ever single week and have risen as high as the No. 3 team in the nation. This group of seniors, in their very first year, helped win the first ACC tournament championship in program history in and followed that up by winning the 2017 ACC regular-season crown. The team has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship each of the last three years and looks to go four-for-four when selections are announced this year
  • They have combined to contribute 114 points in the last four years, which is made even more impressive by the fact that half of them are defenders

 
 
Noting the Cavaliers

  • Virginia brings a five-game win streak into Monday’s contest against No. 17 Liberty
  • Virginia’s last six games have all been decided by one goal, going 5-1 in that span
  • Virginia is in a three-way tie for second place in the ACC with Louisville and Boston College, all with 3-2 records with one conference game remaining
  • The Cavaliers moved up to No. 6 in this week’s NFHCA rankings after coming in at No. 7 last week. New rankings will be released on Tuesday afternoon
  • Last week, Virginia was ranked 10th in the nation in goals-against average, allowing 1.16 goals per game
  • Senior back Anzel Viljoen (Matamata, New Zealand) leads the team with 20 points
  • She is third in the ACC in assists with .50 per game (8 total)
  • Sophomore midfielder Annie McDonough (Kennett Square, Pa.) is fourth in the ACC with .47 assists per game  (7 total)
  • Viljoen and junior striker Makayla Gallen (Glen Mills, Pa.) are tied for the team lead with six goals apiece
  • Viljoen has had a goal or an assist in all but four games this season
  • Redshirt sophomore goalie Lauren Hausheer (West Windsor, N.J.) is ranked 11th in the nation in goals-against average (1.07 per game). She has five shutouts this season
  • Head coach Michele Madison has 407 career wins and is currently tied for eighth place with Cheryl Murtagh among Division I field hockey coaches. With her next win, she will be alone in eighth place on the career wins list

 
Scouting Liberty

  • Virginia leads the all-time series, 4-1, but suffered its lone loss in the series in the last meeting between the two, a 3-2 setback last season in Lynchburg
  • Liberty has back-to-back games against top-10 opponents after falling 6-3 to UConn on Saturday
  • Daniella Rhodes leads the team in scoring with 32 points (12 goals, eight assists)
  • Jill Bolton has also topped 20 points with nine goals and four assists
  • Allison Schaefer has played the whole season in goal, posing a .627 save percentage and allowing 1.35 goals per game

 
On the Horizon

  • Virginia closes out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 1, playing at No. 20 Wake Forest (7-9, 0-5 ACC) at 6 p.m.
