Virginia Falls to Clemson in Straight Sets
CLEMSON, S.C. – Virginia (11-18, 3-13 ACC) fell 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 on the road at Clemson (11-16, 5-11 ACC) on Sunday (Nov. 17).
Christine Jarman (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Sarah Billiard (Matthews, N.C.) co-led the Cavaliers with eight kills each. Jarman’s eight kills matched a season-high for the junior.
Clemson was paced by 12 kills from Kaylin Korte. The Tigers also put up 11 blocks to limit Virginia to .111 hitting in the match. Clemson finished the contest hitting .337.
SET 1: Clemson 25-18
Four early errors put Virginia in a 10-4 hole to open the match. Clemson would build its advantage to seven at 16-9 before the Cavaliers were able to produce a response. Virginia scored four of the next five points, capped by an Alex Spencer (North Canton, Ohio) service ace, to close within 17-13.
A Milla Ciprian (St. John’s, Fla.) termination pulled Virginia within three at 19-16, but Clemson quelled the comeback with a 3-0 run. The Tigers would see out the set, hitting .483 in the frame, for a 25-18 win.
SET 2: Clemson 25-20
After falling behind 10-8, Virginia used a 3-0 run to take an 11-10 lead. Jennifer Wineholt (San Diego, Calif.) capped the run with a kill. The Cavaliers would hold a slim margin to 17-15 before Clemson launched a 3-0 run of its own to retake the advantage.
Tied at 19-19, a block from Ava Pritchard and Solei Thomas helped Clemson pull away with a 3-0 run and take a 2-0 advantage.
SET 3: Clemson 25-16
Clemson used an early 3-0 run to take a 5-2 lead in the set. Shortly after, Clemson used a 5-0 run to open a 10-4 edge. The Tigers maintained the lead to 15-10 and then used another 3-0 run to extend the edge to 18-11.
The Tigers hit .452 in the set to clinch the sweep.
