CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia men’s squash team (3-0) opened its season on Saturday (Nov. 2) at the McArthur Squash Center with wins against Franklin and Marshall (1-1), Richmond (2-4) and North Carolina (3-2).  
 
The Cavaliers defeated Franklin and Marshall, 6-3, to open the 2019-20 season. Sophomore Glenn Yates (Cape Town, South Africa) captured the first point of the day with a 12-10, 11-6, 11-3 win against Flavio Hinostroza in position six. Junior Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) followed with a 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 victory in position nine against Kingman Bassett as freshman Aly Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) defeated Sanjay Jeeva 11-4, 10-12, 11-3, 11-2 in position one.
 
Sophomore Patrick McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) moved the score to 4-0 with his 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8 win in position three, but the Diplomats recorded back-to-back wins in position four and eight, respectively, to make the score 4-2. Freshman Omar El Torkey (New Cairo, Egypt) clinched the match for the Cavaliers moments later with an 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 victory in position two against Shamseldeen Abbas, before junior William Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) extended the Cavalier score to six with a 7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-8 win in position seven against Raunak Advani.
 
“It was a solid start to the season – opening up with a win over a good team like F&M,” head coach Mark Allen said. “As per the last two seasons, a number of our players had some first match jitters, but enough of them found a way to scrap their way through and get the win, which is something we haven’t managed to do in previous season openers – so definitely a step in the right direction. On the whole, a positive start that we will look to build on.”
 
Virginia defeated Richmond 9-0 in its second match of the day. Freshman Peter Miller (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) defeated Yash Jalan 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 in position one, while senior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) went 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 in position two against James Darling.
 
Junior Mathew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) captured an 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 win against Teddy Manges in position three, as freshman Tyler Mackesy (Bronxville, N.Y.), senior Harrison Kapp (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior Christian Kohlmeyer (Lake Forest, Ill.) won in positions four, five and six, respectively. Mackesy defeated Ethan Prichard 11-8, 11-4, 11-4, while Kapp topped Daniel Beyer 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 and Kohlmeyer topped Andrew Kichline 11-1, 11-2, 11-0.
 
The Cavaliers closed the day with a 9-0 win against North Carolina. Kohlmeyer captured his second win of the day, going 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 against Vraj Patel in position eight. Katz defeated Hazim Mukhtar 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 in position six, while sophomore Will Holey (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated Christopher Gsell 11-2, 11-4, 11-5 in position two.
 
William Braff captured the team’s fourth point with an 11-7, 11-3, 11-8 win against Ali Khan in position four as Kapp clinched the match point with a score of 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 against Brooks Jarrett in position seven.
 
Hansford, McElroy and Yates rounded out the day with wins in position five, one and three, respectively. Hansford defeated George Shepherd 11-7, 11-9, 11-5,  McElroy defeated Peter Kapp 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 and Yates defeated Alex Mangiapane 11-9, 11-4, 11-8.
 
Virginia will return home on Nov. 13 to host Navy at the McArthur Squash Center.
