Virginia Defeats Franklin and Marshall, Richmond on Opening Weekend
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia women’s squash team (2-0) swept Franklin and Marshall (1-1) and Richmond (0-2) in matches at the McArthur Squash Center on Saturday (Nov. 2) to open the season with a 2-0 record.
The Cavaliers opened the day with a 9-0 win against Mid-Atlantic Conference rival, Franklin and Marshall.
Freshman Sydney Maxwell (Toronto, Ontario) put the Cavaliers on the board, with an 11-5, 11-6, 11-3 win against Zoe Quayle in position six. Senior Sarah Doss (Richmond, Va.) followed with an 11-2, 11-0, 11-1 win against Mimi Fairbanks in position nine as sophomore Emma Jinks (Stratford, Prince Edward Island) extended the lead to 3-0 with an 11-8, 11-6, 11-3 win against Audrey Berling in position one.
Junior Emily Woodworth (Weston, Mass.) topped position three, 11-4, 11-2, 11-2, while senior Julia Thompson (Newtown Square, Pa.) defeated Pratiksha Mishra 11-1, 11-4, 11-2 in position five.
Freshman Maria Paula Moya (Ambato, Ecuador) recorded a win against Katherine Galambos 11-3, 11-7, 11-8 in position four, while senior Tara Arya (Cupertino, Calif.) defeated Julia Bevan 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 in position eight. Sophomores Caroline Baldwin (Rye, N.Y.) and Mandy Haywood (Christ Church, Barbados) rounded out the match as Baldwin recorded an 11-2, 11-2, 11-3 in position seven against Grace Smith and Haywood recorded an 11-9, 11-5, 11-13, 11-2 win in position two against Emily Knapp.
The Cavaliers also captured a 9-0 victory against Richmond. Senior Lois Lo (Hong Kong) defeated Isabella Warren 11-0, 11-2, 11-0 in position nine to clinch the first point of the match as junior Giovanna Veiga de Almeida (Christ Church, Barbados) followed with an 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 win in position six against Annie Waters.
Woodworth and senior Isabelle Ezratty (Greenwich, Conn.) added wins in positions one and eight to extend UVA’s lead to 4-0. Woodworth defeated Rose Mascarenhas 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 as Ezratty topped Julia Mason 11-1, 11-2, 11-2.
Freshman Julia Curran (Bronxville, N.Y.) cliched the match point, going 11-1, 11-1, 11-0 against Isabela Keetley in positions four. Maxwell added a point with an 11-2, 11-2, 11-2, victory against Lindsay White in position three, while senior Elle Carroll (New York, N.Y.) defeated Bailey Santaguida 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 in position seven and freshman Grace Seymour (Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.) defeated Molley Barry 11-1, 11-1, 11-3 in position five. Moya closed the match with an 11-3, 11-4, 11-2 win against Clarissa Gillis in position two.
“Comfortable matches for the women today, and I’m pleased that there was no complacency and that they all came out sharp and ready to play,” head coach Mark Allen said. “Congratulations to Julia Curran, Sydney Maxwell, Maria Moya and Grace Seymour, our new players, who all opened up their UVA squash careers with 3-0 wins.”
The Cavaliers will return to action on Nov. 19 as the team hits the road to face George Washington.
