Volleyball Visits Virginia Tech for Season Finale

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia volleyball (12-18, 4-13 ACC) concludes the 2019 season against Virginia Tech (10-19, 3-13 ACC) on Wednesday night (Nov. 27) in Blacksburg. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
The Cavaliers are looking for the season sweep of the Hokies after earning a 3-1 win in the previous meeting in Charlottesville.

ANUKWUEM’S ASTOUNDING PERFORMANCE
Virginia’s Senior Day sweep of Boston College was powered by seniors. Chino Anukwuem (East Hanover, N.J.) was a major force, throwing back a career-high 10 blocks in the three-set victory. The mark is the second-most by a Virginia player in three sets, falling one shy of the all-time record.
Anukwuem added six kills while hitting .417 to round out one of the best performances in her career.
THE SEASON THAT WAS
Wednesday’s match at Virginia Tech marks the end of the 2019 campaign for Virginia. Despite four starters suffering season-ending injuries, the Cavaliers have already recorded the team’s most wins since 2015. A win on Wednesday at Virginia Tech would mark the most ACC wins for Virginia since 2015 as well.
LAST TIME VS. VIRGINIA TECH
The first meeting between Virginia and Virginia Tech came on the opening weekend of ACC play when the Cavaliers downed the Hokies 3-1 in Charlottesville. After splitting a pair of tight sets, Virginia dominated the third and fourth to earn the win.
Freshman Mattison Matthews (Charleston, S.C.) set a career high with 12 kills in the win. Three other Cavaliers finished in double figures to produce one of the most-balanced attacks of the year for Virginia.
Since then, the Cavaliers have seen three starters go down with injuries, however, so a new look will be on display against the Hokies on Wednesday.
SENIOR DAY MOMENT
Virginia’s sweep of Boston College was special right from the start on Friday night. Senior libero Kelsey Miller (Crestwood, Ky.), who suffered a career-ending knee injury on Oct. 4 at Florida State, made one final start for the Cavaliers. She served the opening point of the match, which the Cavaliers proceeded to win with only five players on the court. The moment sparked a 5-0 run to start the match.
Miller ends her career 10th all-time on UVA’s digs list.
MATTHEWS CHASING HISTORY
Matthews is one match away from breaking Virginia’s freshman record for hitting percentage. Matthews is currently hitting .382 on the season, a mark that would shatter the current record held by Anna Walsh who hit .354 in 2015.
The .382 mark would also rank second in single-season performances at UVA by any player. Beth Brockell holds the current Virginia record at .404, producing the mark in 1988.
