Bossi and Bovari Represent Italy at Spirit International Amateur
Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia freshmen golfers Virginia Bossi (Como, Italy) and Pietro Bovari (Milano, Italy) will compete for their home country of Italy this week at the 2019 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship. The three-day tournament takes place Thursday through Sunday at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
The 2019 Spirit International features 76 competitors from 19 countries, representing six continents. It is a 54-hole four-ball stroke play competition, with three concurrent competition categories: international team, men’s team and women’s team. Gold, silver and bronze commemorative medals are awarded to the top finishers in each competition.
Countries competing at the 2019 Spirit International Golf Championship include: Argentina, Australia, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.
Bossi played in all four of UVA’s tournaments this fall and led the team with a 73.00 stroke average. She was the Cavaliers’ top finisher at The Landfall Tradition tournament. Bovari played for UVA at the season-opening Carpet Capitol Collegiate in his only tournament action this fall.
Established in 2001, The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship is a biennial event that alternates years with the World Amateur Team Championships. All participants enjoy an Olympic like experience including Opening Ceremonies, International Village accommodations, festive dinner parties, Closing Ceremonies in addition to the 54-hole golf event where the world’s best amateur golfers compete for gold medals. The Spirit is hosted by the Spirit Golf Association, a charitable organization dedicated to promoting amateur golf for the benefit of health related causes.
The event is back for the first time since 2015, as the 2017 Spirit was cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey.
