CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team heads out on a two-game road trip. They will play at Southern California (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12), the alma mater of UVA head coach Tina Thompson, on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. ET. The team wraps up the trip by playing at CSUN (0-1, 0-0 Big West) on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. ET in Northridge, Calif.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia head coach Tina Thompson’s No. 14 jersey will be retired by USC in a pregame ceremony right before tip of Saturday’s game at the Galen Center. Still ranked as USC’s No. 5 all-time scorer (2,248 career points) and rebounder, she was a USBWA All-American as a senior in 1997, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in 1994 and a three-time first team all-conference honoree
  • UVA associate head coach Karleen Thompson is also a Women of Troy alumna and was a teammate of Tina Thompson at USC
  • The last meeting between Virginia and USC was in 1995, Tina Thompson’s junior season at USC. Ranked #7 in the nation at the time, Virginia beat USC 78-68 at an event in Westwood, Calif. Thompson scored 25 points in the game. In Thompson’s freshman season and Karleen Thompson’s junior season, USC beat Virginia 85-66 in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, with Thompson scoring 18 points in that Trojan victory
  • Virginia freshman guard Dylan Horton (Los Angeles, Calif.) is also from the area, having played at Redondo Union high School
  • The Cavaliers opened the 2019-20 season with an 84-60 win over Bucknell, a 2019 NCAA Tournament team
  • The 84 points scored against Bucknell was the most by a Cavalier team since scoring 103 against Central Connecticut State on 11/12/17 and was the first 80-point game for UVA since an 82-70 win over North Carolina that same season (1/25/18)
  • Virginia shot over 50 percent overall (54.9 percent) and from three-point range (54.5 percent) while also making 78.6 percent of its free throw attempts
  • Virginia dominated the boards, doubling-up Bucknell in rebounds 38-19
  • The team tallied 20 assists for the 28 field goals scored against the Bison
  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) scored 31 points in the game, the most by a Cavalier since Monica Wright scored 34 against Green Bay on March 21, 2010
  • Willoughby went 9-of-15 from the field and 10-of-11 from the stripe
  • Willoughby also led the team in rebounding, grabbing 11 boards. It was the 15th of her career
  • Redshirt freshman guard Amandine Toi (Pairs, France) made her delayed collegiate debut against Bucknell. Toi suffered a knee injury just prior to the start of the 2017-18 season and missed the entire year. Toi suffered an injury to her other knee just prior to the start of the 2018-19 season and missed the whole year. She was in the starting lineup against Bucknell, scoring 11 points with six assists
  • Redshirt sophomore forward Dani Lawson (Cleveland, Ohio) also returned to the court, and was in the starting lineup for Bucknell, after a prolonged absence. It was her first action since Nov. 25, 2017. She missed half the year while a freshman at Purdue, recovering from an injury, before having to sit out all of last year after transferring
  • The Cavalier freshmen (including Toi) combined to score 37 points against Bucknell

 
SCOUTING USC

  • USC is picked to finish ninth in the preseason Pac-12 poll
  • There are nine new faces are on the roster for 2019-20. In addition to grad transfers Aliyah Jeune (from Morehead State) and Stephanie Watts (North Carolina), USC has seven true freshmen in the mix. They include two state Gatorade Players of the Year in forward Alissa Pili (Alaska) and guard Endyia Rogers (Texas), as well as McDonald’s All-American center Angel Jackson
  • Watts is a grad transfer who played three seasons at North Carolina. She was the 2016 ACC Freshman of the Year and later led the team in three-pointers made as a redshirt junior last season. In her three seasons as a Tar Heel, she scored 1,320 points. In her final season, she averaged 15.2 point, 5.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while knocking down 82 threes
  • Watts is on the Ann Myers Drysdale Award preseason watch list, an honor recognizing the top shooting guard in the nation. Jocelyn Willoughby is also on that watch list
  • This is just the third-ever meeting between the two teams

 
SCOUTING CSUN

  • The Cavaliers close out the California trip by playing at CSUN (Cal State Northridge) on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. PT (7 p.m. ET)
  • CSUN is picked to finish seventh out of nine teams in the Big West Preseason Coaches’ Poll
  • The Matadors went 16-15 overall last season, going 10-6 in the Big West Conference. De’Jionae Calloway is CSUN’s top returning scorer, having averaged 6-2 points per game last season. Eliza Matthews is CSUN’s top returning rebounder with 5.6 rebounds per game last season
  • CSUN opened the season by hosting USC, falling 69-53 at the Matadome
  • The Matadors took 26 more field goal attempts than the Women of Troy (78-52) but were held to 24.4% shooting for the night (19-of-78). USC went 44.2% from the floor (23-of-52)
  • CSUN had 10 more offensive rebounds than the Women of Troy (14-4). Southern California held a 46-25 advantage on the defensive glass for a 50-39 advantage for the night
  • Jordyn Jackson led the offense with 14 points, including four treys
  • CSUN was edged 65-61 by The Master’s, an NAIA school, in their final preseason exhibition game
  • The Matadors play at California Baptist on Saturday before hosting UVA on Tuesday
  • This is the second-ever meeting between the two teams. UVA won the first meeting 75-69 on Dec. 29, 2000 in Northridge

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia returns home to host Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. The Virginia men’s basketball team also plays that day at John Paul Jones Arena, with the men tipping against Columbia at noon
  • There will be free admission to the women’s game with a ticket from the men’s game against Columbia
