LYNCHBURG, Va.- Junior Brenton Foster (Townsville, Australia) tied the Virginia men’s track and field high jump record on Saturday (Feb. 2) as he led the Cavaliers at the Liberty Flames Invite.

Foster tied Herman Moore’s high jump record set in 1990, clearing a height of 2.21m (7’3″). The performance also set a Liberty Indoor Track Complex record and ties as the 10th-best mark nationally this season.

“Brenton was sluggish to start and he worked his way out of it,” director of track and field Bryan Fetzer said. “He cleared 7 feet 3 inches on his third attempt, that goes a long way in the area of confidence. That showed a lot of focus, and it will play dividends down the road.”

In the field events, senior Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) won the shot put, recording a mark of 17.96m (58’11.25″), while redshirt junior Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) topped the pole vault, clearing a height of 5.10m (16’08.75″).

Junior Noah Toney (West Orange, N.J.) captured a career-best time of 1:54.95 in the 800m run to finish second in the event as sophomore Brandon Outlaw (Moorestown, N.J.) finished second in the 400m dash with a season-best time of 48.97.

Senior Emmanuel Jackson (Raleigh, N.C.) advanced to the finals of the 60m hurdles where he finished third with a time of 8.17.

In the mile, sophomore Ryan Buscaglia (Richmond, Va.) ran a time of 4:15.71, third-fastest time of the day.

The day concluded with three Cavaliers finishing in the top five of the 3000m run. Sophomore Harry Monroe (Salem, Va.) paced the team with a second-place finish and a time of 8:23.02. Redshirt senior Connor Hendrickson (Southlake, Texas) finished fourth with a time of 8:39.28, while freshman Ahmed Hassan (Fairfax, Va.) finished fifth with a time of 8:43.22.

“The competitive effort continues,” Fetzer said. “That’s tough when you are not a in a major competition. Every week they’ve gone out and competed to win, while learning competitive lessons along the way.”

The team will return to action on February 8, sending a split squad to both the Tiger Paw Invite in Clemson, S.C., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
