Jackson, Mueller Named to Tewaaraton Award Watch List
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.) and junior Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) have been named to the 2019 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, the organization announced on Thursday (Feb. 28).
The midfielders have helped UVA to 5-0 starts in back-to-back seasons. The pair have combined for 207 goals, 106 assists, 242 ground balls, 330 draw controls and 114 caused turnovers.
Jackson, a 2017 All-American, was second on the team with 64 points on 32 goals and a team-high 32 assists in 2018. Jackson set a single-season UVA record with 97 draw controls last season. This year, Jackson has a team-high 22 points with nine goals and 13 assists. Jackson currently ranks third all-time at UVA with 225 draw controls and fifth with 84 assists.
Mueller was named All-American in 2018 after leading the Cavaliers with 74 points on 59 goals and 15 assists. Her 59 goals in a single season ranks ninth all-time at UVA. Mueller also added 81 draws and 34 ground balls. Mueller has a team-high 13 goals and 19 ground balls in 2019.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 21 and April 4. On April 25, the field will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
Five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 9 and invited to the 19th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 30.
