Virginia Opens Action at NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia men’s swimming and diving team will travel to the NCAA Championships to open competition Wednesday (March 27) at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The 800-yard freestyle relay will kickoff competition on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET. Preliminary races on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will start at 11 a.m., while finals on those three days will begin at 7 p.m.

ESPN3 will broadcast the finals on all four days of competition. The stream will begin at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday to cover all heats of the 1650-yard freestyle. Preliminary races will be streamed on the NCAA Swimming and Diving microsite at www.texassports.com. Fans can also follow the action through live results or on Meet Mobile. The Team
• The Cavaliers qualified 12 swimmers and two divers for the NCAA Championships.
• The swimming roster is the fourth largest at the competition site.
• The 12-member swimming roster is also the largest for the Cavaliers (not including alternates) since 2004.
• Virginia will also send two divers as junior Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) qualified in all three events and freshman Walker Creedon (Cary, N.C.) advanced on the 3m board and platform.
• The Cavaliers will also compete in the 800-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Hoo’s In the Pool
• Redshirt senior Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.) leads the team, entering the national championship with three individual swims that rank in the top-10 nationally this season. Casey holds the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season in the 400-yard individual medley, the seventh-best time in the mile and eight-best time in the 500-yard freestyle.
• Casey enters the meet with momentum after recording the ACC title in the 400-yard individual medley and 1650-yard freestyle. He tied as the top point scorer at the ACC Championships with the Co-ACC Most Valuable Swimmers of the Meet Caio Pumputis from Georgia Tech and Coleman Stewart from NC State.
• In addition to Casey, junior Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain) recorded the ninth-fastest swim nationally in the 100-yard backstroke at the ACC Championships. He finished third in the event at the conference meet.
• The Cavaliers enter with six additional individual events fighting for All-America honors and a top 16 finish, as senior Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) in the 100 (seeded 16th) and 200-yard butterfly (seeded 12th), sophomore Robby Giller (Wilton, Conn.) in the 200-yard backstroke (seeded 15th), senior Bryce Keblish (Fairfield, Conn.) in the 100-yard butterfly (seeded 15th), sophomore Matthew Otto (Newark, Del.) in the 200-yard breaststroke (seeded 17th) and Clark in the 200-yard backstroke (seeded 20th) are seeded in the top 20 of their respective events.
Last Season
• Virginia will look to improve upon its 29th-place finish from last year’s championship in Minneapolis, Minn.
• UVA returned all four of its individual All-America honorees on this year’s championship roster. Junior Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.) led the team as an honorable mention All-America honoree in the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly. Fong was an honorable mention All-American in the 200-yard butterfly, while Clark recorded honorable mention All-America honors in the 100-yard backstroke and Giller recorded honorable mention All-America honors in the 400-yard individual medley.
• Virginia also finished in the top 16 in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay.
Tickets
Standing room only and obstructed view single session tickets may be available on a first-come first-serve basis. The tickets will go on sale the day of the event. Preliminary and diving tickets will cost $10 each day, while tickets to finals will cost $15.
