NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (9-4, 1-4 ACC) fell 16-9 at No. 1 Boston College (12-0, 3-0 ACC) on Saturday afternoon at Newton Lacrosse Field.
 
Junior Sammy Mueller (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Ashlyn McGovern (Phoenix, Md.) led the Cavaliers with three goals each. Senior Avery Shoemaker (Wyndmoor, Pa.), junior Nora Bowen (Lovettsville, Va.) and freshman Lillie Kloak (Ridgewood, N.J.) each had one goal.
 
The Cavaliers trailed BC in shots (29-23), draw controls (18-9) and ground balls (15-12). Both teams finished with five caused turnovers. UVA had eight saves to 10 for Eagles. Sam Apuzzo led BC with six goals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
McGovern scored the only goal for UVA in the first half as it trailed 10-1 at halftime. The Cavaliers found rhythm with a 4-0 run early in the second half. McGovern sparked the run with the assist from senior Maggie Jackson (Alexandria, Va.). Mueller then scored back-to-back goals and Jackson found Kloak to complete the run and cut it to 11-5. BC scored before Bowen netted a goal with the assist from Mueller. Mueller then reached a hat trick with a goal at 11:34 as UVA trailed 12-7. BC scored two goals, then Shoemaker scored to make it 14-8. The Eagles added another goal before McGovern had her third for a hat trick.
 
NOTES

  • Mueller had her seventh hat trick of the season and added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • It was the fourth hat trick of the season for McGovern.
  • Jackson led with four draw controls and junior Anna Hauser (Baltimore, Md.) added three.
  • Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) had eight saves.
