No. 5 Virginia Begins ACC Championship on Friday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia men’s tennis team (19-3, 10-2 ACC) begins postseason play this week by competing at the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Championship, being held April 17-21 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
The Cavaliers, the No. 2 seed in the championship, will open the tournament by taking on 7-seed Florida State on Friday, April 19 in a quarterfinal match at 12 p.m. The match will be played at the indoor courts at the Cary Tennis Center.
The men’s semifinals will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday (April 20) with the final set for Sunday (April 21) at 10 a.m. Both of those matches are scheduled to be played on the normal banks of outdoor courts.

The Cavaliers remained No. 5 in this week’s Oracle ITA rankings after closing out the regular season with a pair of 4-2 wins over No. 9 North Carolina and Virginia Tech, extending UVA’s current win streak to seven matches. Junior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) remained at No. 5 in the Oracle ITA singles rankings after improving to 17-3 in singles this season and a 9-1 record in ACC matches.
Freshman Brandon Nakashima (San Diego, Calif.) was named the ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season. Nakashima is undefeated in his last seven matches, including picking up a pair of victories at No. 2 singles last weekend. He, along with senior Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) was also named the ACC Doubles Team of the Week. Nakashima and Wiersholm are currently ranked No. 37 in doubles and finished conference play with a perfect 7-0 record. Nakashima is the only Cavalier to be ranked in both singles and doubles, with a No. 82 ranking.
Freshman Ryan Goetz (Greenlawn, N.Y.) returned to the court for last weekend’s matches after not having played a singles match since ITA Indoors and picked up the clinching victory over Virginia Tech. Goetz was the runner-up in singles at the ITA Atlantic Regional in the fall and has an 18-10 record in his rookie campaign.
The Cavaliers have won 12 ACC Championships (2004-05, 2007-15, 2017), tied with Duke for second-most in the history of the conference and trailing only North Carolina.
