Guy Leads Cavaliers on Final Day of Virginia Grand Prix
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s track and field team concluded the regular season on Saturday (April 27) at the Virginia Grand Prix at Lannigan Field.
“It was kind of a quiet day when compared to the men, but we really accomplished a lot in preparation for ACCs,” director of track and field Bryan Fetzer said. “We have begun to perform at a high level consistently. When that occurs, big breakthroughs are right around the corner.”
Redshirt senior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) topped the pole vault with a season-best jump, clearing 4.33m (14-2.5). Her performance in the event ranks 10th in the NCAA and is the second best in the ACC this season.
Junior Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.) ran a season-best in the 400m dash to capture the top time of the day. Her time of 53.59 ranks 23rd in the region.
Sophomore Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) recorded a career-best time in the 100m dash to finish second in the event. Hazzard ran a time of 11.58 to record the fifth-fastest time in school history.
Senior Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) and junior Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) both captured season-best runs in the 100m hurdles. Leonard ran a time of 13.29 to finish second in the event and record the 13th-best time in the region this season. Woodley finished third in the event with a time of 13.47, 29th best in the region.
In the 400m hurdles, junior Andrenette Knight (Morant Bay, Jamaica) ran the top time in the event. She recorded a time of 58.99 for first place.
In the triple jump, senior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) recorded a wind-assisted jump of 13.52m (44-4.25) to finish first in the event.
Sophomore Gabrielle Hayes (Woodbridge, Va.) cleared 1.62m (5-7.75) in the high jump to record a season-best mark and finish second in the event.
“Senior Day is always a bittersweet day,” Fetzer said. “It’s exciting for all that they have accomplished in their time at UVA, but I think the biggest is seeing them grow and mature as people. There has been a lot of struggle and adversity and at the same time perseverance.”
Up next, the Cavaliers will compete at the ACC Championships May 9-11. The conference meet will be held at Virginia’s home track and field facility, Lannigan Field.
