Auburn, Ala. – The No. 17 Virginia women’s golf team posted the best single-round score in two days of play at the NCAA Auburn Regional to improve to second place in the team standings with one round left in the qualifying tournament for the NCAA Championships. UVA’s second-round score of 5-under 283 gave the Cavaliers at 36-hole total of 3-over 579. Third-ranked Duke leads the 18-team field at 1-over 577.
 
UVA’s second round scored tied for the second lowest single-round score against par in the program’s history during NCAA regional play.
 
The top six teams from the NCAA’s four regional sites advance to the NCAA Championships. UVA is 10 strokes better than the two teams (Auburn and Tennessee) tied for sixth place after the second round.
 
Sophomore Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) led UVA during the second round by shooting 4-under 68. She finished the day in ninth place at even par 144. Lillie posted five birdies and one bogey during her round.
 
UVA senior Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) shot 1-under 71 and moved up to 18th place at 2-over 146. Senior Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.), got off to a slow start, playing her front nine at 5-over par, but managed to finish her round at 4-over 76 to move into 23rd place at 3-over 147. Senior Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) and freshman Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) are tied for 28th place at 4-over 148. Gonzales shot 74 on Tuesday while Smyth posted a career-best score of 2-under 70.
 
UVA will tee off Wednesday starting at 9:50 a.m. from the No. 1 tee while paired with Duke and Florida State during the event’s final round. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
