Virginia Hosts ACC Championships, Opens Competition Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the three-day ACC Championships at Lannigan Field beginning on Thursday, May 9.
Virginia is the top-ranked men’s ACC team according to the latest release from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Virginia enters the weekend ranked 23rd, while Clemson rounds out the rankings at No. 25.
On the women’s side, Florida State and Miami rank in the top 25 as the Seminoles are 11th and the Hurricanes rank 16th.

Admission to the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is free to the public.

Parking will be first-come, first served at the UHall surface lot, McCue surface lot, JPJ Garage and surface lot, and Emmet/Ivy Garage.
COMMONWEALTH CLASH
• There are two points at stake this week in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, one for both the men’s and women’s competition.
• The Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529 is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 21 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy. Visit www.TheCommonwealthClash.com for more information.
• Virginia currently leads this year’s challenge, 10.5- 8.5.
The Meet
• The Cavaliers will host the ACC Championships for the seventh time in program history.
• The last time the UVA hosted the conference championship was in 2012.
• Two Cavaliers will look to reclaim their conference titles from the 2018 ACC Championships.
• Senior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) will look to capture his fourth hammer throw title this weekend. Jonsson won the event last year with a throw of 71.60m (234’11”), becoming just the third athlete to win three-consecutive ACC championships in the event.
• Redshirt senior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) recorded the Cavaliers’ first women’s pole vault title at the 2018 ACC Championships. She cleared 4.45m (14’7.25″) with her first attempt to win the event.
Hoo’s Topping the Field
• Virginia enters the meet with the top mark in five events and the second-best mark in two additional events.
• The Hoos top the conference on both sides of the triple jump as junior Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) holds the top mark on the men’s side and senior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) ranks first on the women’s side. Both Scott and McKee set UVA records at the Virginia Challenge (April 19-20). Scott’s jump of 17.07m (56’0″) ranks first in the NCAA, while McKee’s jump of 13.70m (44’11.5″) ranks fourth in the country.
• Jonsson recorded the ACC’s top hammer throw mark and second-best throw in the country at the Virginia Grand Prix (April 27), recording a throw of 75.26m (246’11”) with his last throw of the night. The mark set an Icelandic, Lannigan Field and UVA record.
• Redshirt senior Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) captured the ACC’s top mark of the season in the shot put in Virginia’s home competition against Maryland and Pittsburgh (April 6). Efekoro recorded a mark of 20.37m (66’10”), 0.75 inches shy of his career best, to post the sixth best shot put mark in the country.
• In his first collegiate season, freshman Ethan Dabbs ( Johnston, Pa.) captured the ACC’s top regular-season mark in the javelin, throwing 71.31m (233’11”) at the Virginia Grand Prix. He ranks 17th in the NCAA.
• Additionally, UVA holds the second-best pole vault marks in the conference as Guy captured a jump of 4.33m (14’2.5″), 10th-best in the NCAA, and redshirt junior Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) recorded a mark of 5.20m (17’0.75″).
In the Records
• Four Cavaliers set UVA records during the season.
• Scott’s 17.07m (56’0″) triple jump mark topped his Virginia record from the 2018 Jamaica National Championships and the ACC record in the event set in 1979.
• Jonsson closed the regular season, topping the Icelandic record of 74.48m (244’4″) set in 2008 by two feet.
• McKee also topped her school record from the 2018 season with a 13.70m (44’11.5″) triple jump mark.
• Senior Jade Baker (North Richland Hills, Texas) threw 62.67m (205’7″) in the hammer throw at the team’s home meet against Maryland, Pittsburgh and West Virginia (April 6). She passed teammate Eva Mustafic (Zagreb, Croatia), who broke the school record with her opening throw of 61.18m (200’9″), with her last attempt of the day.
