CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Twelve members of the Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams were named to the All-ACC Academic team, the league office announced on Friday (June 21).

The men’s team qualified four for the academic honor with seniors Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia), redshirt junior Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.) and sophomore Jordan Willis (Williamsburg, Va.) capturing the accolade.

Redshirt seniors Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) and Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.), seniors Marija Bogavac (Mojkovac, Montenegro) and Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.), sophomores Kiera Bothwell (Springfield, Va.), Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) and Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.), and freshman Thelma Kristjánsdóttir (Reykjavik, Iceland) received the academic award from the women’s team.

All 12 Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors at the 2019 ACC Outdoor Championships. Jonsson and Guy captured ACC titles in the hammer throw and pole vault, respectively. Both advanced to the NCAA Championships and earned first-team All-America honors. Jonsson placed third in the hammer throw, while Guy finished fourth in the pole vault on the national stage.

Plesko finished as the conference runner-up in the discus to earn first-team All-ACC honors. He also finished sixth in the shot put. Bogavac (javelin), Jones (shot put) and Hazzard (100m dash) also made the podium at the ACC Championships as all three captured a third-place finish in their respective events for first-team All-ACC honors.

Bothwell (3000m steeplechase), Kristjánsdóttir (discus), Leonard (100m hurdles), Mautz (javelin), Novak (3000m steeplechase) and Willis (400m dash) earned second-team honors for their performance at the conference championships.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released at a later date.
