Virginia & Maryland to Square Off in 'Battle for the DMV' on Monday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 12 Virginia (1-0) and No. 1 Maryland (1-0) will play in the second annual “Battle for the DMV” on Monday night at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Ticket Information: D.C. United Season Ticket Members can purchase their tickets to the match for $15 while general admission tickets will be available to the public for $20. All-inclusive tickets with access to the Heineken Club will be available for $75. Suites are also available for purchase starting at $800. All tickets can be purchased HERE.

For Starters
• Virginia and Maryland played the first ever collegiate soccer match at Audi Field last season and return for the second annual “Battle for the DMV”.
• The game will be the only men’s Division I soccer match at an MLS Stadium this fall. The DI Women’s College Cup will be played at Avaya Stadium in San Jose.
• The two teams played to a 0-0 draw in last year’s contest. The shutout was one of six in the first seven games for Virginia.
• Virginia went 6-0-1 against non-conference foes last season.
The Rivalry
• Virginia and Maryland will meet for the 81st time in a series history that dates back to 1941, the first year of soccer at Virginia.
• The Terps lead the overall series 41-29-10 and are unbeaten in their last six matches (4-0-2) against UVA.
• In his 24th season, Head Coach George Gelnovatch is 11-15-6 against Maryland.
• Before exiting the ACC for the Big Ten, Maryland and Virginia played three times in 2013, including in the College Cup Semifinals in Chester, Pa. The Terps edged Virginia 2-1, scoring the first two goals and held off a late Virginia charge.
• Prior to the Audi Field series, the two teams last met on Nov. 22, 2015, a 1-0 Maryland win in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament
The Head Coaches
• George Gelnovatch and Sasho Cirovski have a combined 732 wins and five national titles.
• Gelnovatch has qualified for 23-consecutive NCAA Tournaments, an NCAA record. Second on the list is Cirovski with 18 from 2001 to the present.
• Among active NCAA coaches, Gelnovatch and Cirovski are two of five that have reached the NCAA Tournament 20 times in their careers.

Against Ranked Foes
• For the second-straight season, Virginia will play the No. 1 team in the country. Last year, the Cavaliers dropped a 3-2 decision to top-ranked Wake Forest at Klöckner Stadium on Oct. 19, 2018.
• Virginia was 3-3-2 against ranked opponents in 2018.

Opening Night Review
• Behind a pair of goals from Irakoze Donasiyano, Virginia topped Pacific, 2-0 in its season opener on Friday night (Aug. 30). He put the Cavaliers on the board in the 44th minute and found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the second half for his first career multi-goal game.
• Donasiyano was the first Cavalier to score a pair of goals on opening night in a decade. Tony Tchani scored twice against Portland to start off the 2009 season.
• Last year’s co-leading scorer Daryl Dike was credited with two assists.
• Goalkeeper Colin Shutler made four saves and recorded his ninth career clean sheet. His eight shutouts last season were tied for the second most in the ACC.
