CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three members of the Virginia men’s tennis team are competing this week at the Legacy National Bank NWA Tennis Series, an ITF World Tennis Tour $15K tournament being held in Fayetteville, Ark.

Sophomore William Woodall (Washington, D.C.) is competing in the qualifying tournament while senior Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore Ryan Goetzz are playing in the main draw. Söderlund earned a spot in the main draw by virtue of his ATP ranking of 968, while Goetz was awarded a wildcard.

Söderlund made a run to the semifinals in the tournament. He faced Dominik Kellovsky in an opening round match on Tuesday, dominating the second two sets, 6-0, 6-2, after being edged 6-4 in the opener. He dominated Grey Hamilton in the Round of 16 on Thursday, with a 6-1, 6-0 victory before topping Murkel Alejandro Dellien Velasco, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Söderlund trailed 6-4, 4-3 to the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Nick Chappell (ATP rank No. 522), in the semifinals before retiring.
 
Woodall won the first two matches in qualifying, advancing to the qualifying final with a 6-4, 5-2 (ret.) win over Ben Stride and a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 10-4 victory over Kody Pearson. He was edged in a third-set super-tiebreaker in the qualifying final, falling 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 to Eduardo Nava.
 

Goetz faced the tournament’s top seed, Takuto Niki of Japan (current ATP ranking of No. 515) on Wednesday in the first round, but was edged 7-5, 4-6.
