Virginia Hosts Vassar, Western Ontario in Weekend Matches

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s squash teams will open the new year hosting Vassar in an 11:30 a.m. match on Saturday (Jan. 11) at the McArthur Squash Center before the men’s team returns to action on Sunday to play Western Ontario at noon.

The Rankings
Both Cavalier teams enter the weekend with a top-10 national ranking according to the College Squash Association (CSA). The Cavalier men (5-3) have been ranked eighth in the CSA poll since mid-November while the women’s team (4-3) has held a No. 10 ranking since the organization’s preseason poll was released on November 5.
The Cavalier men will battle in a top-15 matchup this weekend, facing No. 13 Western Ontario (4-0) in a home match on Sunday.
Return to Charlottesville
• It’s the first home match for the Cavaliers since the men hosted then-ranked No. 16 Navy on Nov. 13.
• The match against the Midshipmen capped a four-match homestead which saw wins over Franklin and Marshall, Richmond, North Carolina and Navy to open the season.
• The women’s team last competed at the McArthur Squash Center on Nov. 2, hosting the Diplomats and Spiders.
• The women swept both matches 9-0 to open the season 2-0.
Against Vassar
• This is the first meeting between the Cavaliers and Brewers.
• The Vassar men’s team enters the weekend with a 4-10 record after dropping its last eight matches. The Brewers were swept in their last outing, falling to No. 9 George Washington on Thursday (Jan. 9) in Washington.
• The women’s team is also on an eight-match slide. Vassar suffered a sweep against the No. 15 Colonials on Thursday. Vassar enters Saturday’s match with a 4-8 record.
The Mustangs
• This is the second meeting between Virginia and Western Ontario.
• The only meeting between the two programs was in the opening round of the 2018 Hoehn Cup. The Mustangs won that first meeting, 7-2, with senior Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) and junior Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) capturing wins for Virginia.
• The Mustangs will face No. 12 Franklin and Marshall on Friday and Dickinson on Saturday before traveling to Charlottesville.
• Western Ontario enters Sunday’s match with a 4-0 CSA record and a 10-1 overall record.
