CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Members of the No. 20 Virginia women’s tennis team closed the first day of action on both coasts as players competed at the Orlando Invitational in Florida and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in California on Friday (Jan. 10).

Four players hit the courts in Florida as Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), Amber O’Dell (New Milford, N.J.), No 28 Sofia Munera (Pereira, Colombia) and No. 30 Natasha Subhash (Fairfax, Va.) all competed at the Orlando Invitational.

Three Cavaliers took the court in California as Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas), Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.) and Vivian Glozman (Bellevue, Wash.) all competed.

CAVALIERS AT THE ORLANDO INVITATIONAL
The Cavaliers swept a pair of doubles matches on Friday, while Virginia went 2-2 in singles action. Nationally-ranked singles players Subhash and Munera both picked up singles victories against players from Kansas. Subhash defeated No. 63 Sonia Smagina in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-1 victory, while Munera defeated Carmen Manu in a three-set battle by a score of 7-6, 1-6, 6-2.

In other singles action against a pair of Jayhawks, the Kansas players won with No. 93 Malkia Ngounoue defeating O’Dell 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 and Luniuska Delgado defeating Gullickson 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action against pairings from Auburn, the Cavalier duo of Munera and Subhash won by a score of 6-4 over the No. 59 duo of Georgie Axon and Madeline Meredith. The Virginia duo of Gullickson and O’Dell defeated Auburn’s Yu Chen and Taylor Russo by a score of 6-1.

Play will resume at the Orlando Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 11).

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE TENNIS CLASSIC
Three Virginia players competed in the Round of 16 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. 

Bleser won her first-round matchup with a 7-6 (6), 7-5 victory over Baylor’s Kristina Sorokolet before dropping her Round of 16 match to Arizona State’s Lauryn John-Baptiste. The other two Cavaliers, Favero and Glozman, both received first-round byes before falling in the round of 16 to a pair of Baylor players. Favero lost to Angelina Shakhraichuk by a score of 6-4, 6-0, while Jessica Hinojosa defeated Glozman 7-6 (5), 1-6, 1-0 (10). 

In doubles action, the Virginia tandem of Bleser and Glozman defeated Baylor’s pairing of Hinojosa and Mel Krywoj by a score of 8-3. 
 
Bleser and Glozman will face Southern California’s pairing of Eryn Cayetano and Sydney Van Alphen in the semifinals on Saturday (Jan. 11). In singles action, Favero and Glozman will also play in the consolation quarterfinals.
