Virginia Plays at Wake Forest on Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (7-9, 2-3 ACC) travels to play at Wake Forest (10-6, 3-2 ACC) on Thursday, January 16 at 7 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia comes into the game on the heels of a 17-point road win at Boston College
  • BC leads the ACC in scoring. UVA’s defense held the Eagles to 52 points, 26.5 points below their season scoring average. UNC was leading the ACC in scoring when UVA played them on Jan. 2. In that game, the Cavaliers held the Tar Heels to 14.8 points below their season scoring average heading into the game
  • UVA scored 38 points in the paint at BC. It was the third time in the last four games that UVA scored 30 or more points down low after scoring 34 against UNC and 30 against Duke
  • Virginia has shot over 50 percent from the field in both of the last two games, going a combined 52-of-99 (52.5 percent). Against Duke, Virginia did not miss a field goal for a span of 12:29 between the latter half of the first quarter and the first 7:43 of the second period, going 11-of-11 from the field in that time. At BC, UVA closed the game by shooting 9-of-12 (75.0 percent)
  • Senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leads the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.8 points per game. She is currently ranked No. 22 in the nation in scoring
  • Willoughby, who had her third-straight 20-point game by scoring 23 points at Boston College on Sunday, jumped two people to move up to No. 15 on Virginia’s career scoring list. She now has 1416 pints
  • Willoughby is eight boards shy of moving into the top-10 rebounders in program history. Dawn Staley currently sits at No. 10 with 772 in her career. Willoughby has 764
  • After leading the Cavaliers to back-to-back ACC wins over Duke and Boston College, Willoughby and guard Shemera Williams (Milwaukee, Wisc.) were named the ACC Player and Freshman of the Week. It was the first time this season that one school swept both honors
  • Williams was also named the USBWA Tamika Catchings National Freshman Player of the Week. Williams had nine points and nine steals in the win over the Blue Devils. The nine steals was the most in a single game by an ACC player this season and one shy of tying the program record. She followed that performance by scoring a season-high 17 points at Boston College
  • Senior guard Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) has had three-straight double-digit scoring efforts, averaging 13.6 points per game

 
SCOUTING WAKE FOREST

  • Wake Forest has won six of its last eight games
  • The Demon Deacons are second in the ACC and 11th in the nation in rebounding margin at +10.9
  • Ivana Raca is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.3 points per game to rank seventh in the conference
  • Gina Conti is third in the ACC, averaging 5.5 assists per game and ranks fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio 1.76
  • Virginia leads the all-time series 68-6, but Wake Forest won last year’s meeting 52-42 in Charlottesville

 
ON THE HORIZON

  • Virginia returns home on Sunday, Jan. 19 to host Virginia Tech in a Commonwealth Clash game at 3 p.m.
  • The January 19th game is also the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. There will be a pregame sports festival on the upper concourse of JPJ beginning at 1:30. The festival will include sports stations for youth eighth grade and under to visit. Those completing all of the sports stations will receive a complimentary t-shirt. There will also be face painting, balloon artist, pop-a-shot, Plinko and a chance to meet Virginia student-athletes. Doors to the arena open at 1:30, 30 minutes earlier than normal. The sports festival is free with admission to the game
