Virginia Opens 2020 Indoor Season at Virginia Tech Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams will open the 2020 indoor season on Friday (Jan. 17) at the Virginia Tech Invitational at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va.
Admission and parking for the meet is free to the public. Parking is available in the surrounding lots at Rector Field House.

The Opener
• The Cavaliers will open the 2020 indoor season this weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg.
• The meet is the first of three in Blacksburg for the Cavaliers this season. Virginia will also compete at the Hokie Invitational (Jan. 24-25) and the Doc Hale Elite Meet (Feb. 7-8).
• Virginia is one of 12 schools competing at the two-day Virginia Tech Invitational.
• The Cavaliers will face Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, VCU, North Carolina, Charlotte, Elon, Tennessee, Howard, Duke, Pitt and Liberty in the competition. The Volunteer men’s team is ranked 19th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s preseason poll.
Hoo’s Back
• The 2019 NCAA indoor triple jump champion, Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) will look to defend his title and build off of an impressive showing last winter.
• Scott captured the national title with a mark of 55’5″ (16.89m) and was the only competitor at the national meet to clear 55 feet. He was named the ACC Indoor Field Performer of the Year and USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Field Athlete of the Year.
• Scott was listed as receiving votes for the preseason Bowerman Watch List.
• In addition to Scott, Brenton Foster (Townsville, Australia) earned a trip to the NCAA Championships. He captured his first All-America honor in a Cavalier uniform with an 11th-place finish in the high jump. He finished 10th in the event at the 2018 indoor championships, competing for Manhattan College.
• The Cavaliers return five All-ACC honorees from 2019. Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.- 60m dash), Scott (long jump | triple jump) and Foster (high jump) earned first-team honors during last year’s ACC Championships. Anna Jefferson’s (Warren, Mich.) run in the 400m and Ari Klau’s (West Hartford, Conn.) performance in the 3000m earned them second-team All-ACC honors.
The Hoos Looking to Build on 2018-19
• The Cavaliers will look to build off last year’s success, including a top-20 finish on the men’s side at the NCAA Championships.
• The finish was the third time in four years that Virginia placed inside the top 20 at the NCAA Championships.
• During the season, the team set three school records as Scott topped the men’s triple jump and long jump, and Hazzard set a record in the 60m dash. Foster tied the UVA record set by Herman Moore in the high jump.
• Additionally, Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) holds the UVA record in the 60m hurdles, while Jordan Willis (Williamsburg, Va.) and Brandon Outlaw (Moorestown, N.J.) helped the men’s 4×400 to a Virginia record. Both records were set in 2018.
